The Villisca Ax Murder House might be the most famous haunted house in Iowa. An unknown killer took the lives of eight people, including six children, in their sleep. Visitors often hear children playing with toys and laughing in the empty rooms. The second mental health institute in Iowa was built in Independence in the late 19th century. Most of the building is still in use, but the older wings offer whispers, cold drafts, and faint screams to hear. There is also the Victorian hotel in Strawberry Point that offers a beautiful dining room and vintage lobby. You’ll find two ghosts there to greet you, sometimes moving furniture or using the old bell messaging system. The small-town culture that you’ll find in Iowa creates intimate experiences when you visit one of the many haunted houses that are hosted each year. If you’re ready for some fun, then this state is where you’ll want to be.
